Carpet Padding: The 6/8/10 lb Decision That Determines Your Carpet's Real Lifespan

Nobody buys carpet for the padding. Homeowners choose color, texture, and style — then let the installer pick the padding underneath. But padding density determines whether the carpet above it holds up for 8 years or 20. It’s the specification most homeowners never ask about, and most installers don’t volunteer until asked.

What padding actually does

Carpet padding serves three functions: cushions the carpet fiber against impact (footsteps compress the carpet against the padding — hard subfloor with no give crushes the fiber flat within months), extends carpet lifespan (proper padding absorbs the wear that would otherwise flatten and mat the carpet backing), and improves comfort underfoot and sound absorption.

The performance difference between quality padding and bargain padding is enormous. The same $4/sq ft carpet lasts 20 years over 8 lb padding and 10 years over 4 lb padding. The padding upgrade is typically $0.30-$0.60/sq ft — a fraction of the carpet cost and a huge impact on lifespan.

2-2.5x
Carpet lifespan · Quality vs bargain padding
Identical carpet installed over quality 8-10 lb rebond padding lasts 2-2.5 times as long as the same carpet over 4-6 lb padding. The padding upgrade typically pays back within the first 5-7 years through avoided replacement.

Density explained — what the lb rating means

Padding density is measured in pounds per cubic foot. The number represents how much material is packed into a given volume — higher numbers mean denser, firmer padding. This is different from thickness. Two padding samples can both be 3/8″ thick, but one might be 5 lb density and the other 10 lb density.

Density is what matters for performance. A dense 3/8″ pad outperforms a fluffy 1/2″ pad because it doesn’t compress under foot traffic. Compressed padding stops cushioning the carpet fiber above it. Once compression is permanent (which happens quickly with low-density padding), the carpet’s wear layer is fighting hard subfloor with no protection — and it flattens fast.

Padding density tiers explained

4-6 lb Padding

Builder-grade / Bargain installs
The padding that ships with cheap builder-grade installations. Compresses within months of installation.
  • Lowest cost
  • Meets minimum manufacturer warranty requirements
  • Fine for very light-use rooms (guest bedrooms rarely used)
  • Compresses permanently within months
  • Halves carpet lifespan compared to quality pad
  • Voids most premium carpet warranties
  • Feel underfoot degrades quickly

8 lb Padding

The Sioux Falls default recommendation
The sweet spot for most residential installations. Handles family traffic without permanent compression.
  • Sioux Falls residential default
  • Meets/exceeds all major manufacturer warranties
  • 20-year carpet lifespan potential
  • Reasonable cost premium ($0.30-$0.50/sq ft over 6 lb)

10 lb Padding

Heavy traffic / Pet homes
Commercial-grade density for tough residential conditions.
  • Best long-term investment for busy households
  • Handles pets, kids, heavy furniture
  • Extends carpet lifespan 25-30 years
  • Superior noise absorption for upstairs rooms
  • Firmer feel underfoot (some prefer softer)
  • Slightly higher cost ($0.15-$0.30/sq ft over 8 lb)

Rebond vs foam vs prime foam — the material choice

Beyond density, there are three main padding material categories in residential use:

Rebond padding uses recycled foam scraps bonded into pads. It’s the dominant residential padding — colorful, dense, cost-effective, and works well when specified at 8-10 lb density. This is what you want under most residential carpet installations.

Prime foam is a single-piece foam pad without recycled content. Softer feel, less durable, and generally not the right choice for busy households. Common in very budget installations. Avoid for anything except rarely-used rooms.

Frothed foam / memory foam is a premium option with excellent sound absorption and comfort. More expensive, worth it for upstairs bedrooms and home offices where sound transmission matters.

Fiber pad is a specialty pad for Berber carpets — firmer than rebond to prevent Berber from getting “trampoline effect” that damages the carpet backing.

Nobody upgrades to 8-lb padding on impulse in the showroom. But the same $4,000 carpet install over quality padding lasts twice as long. The math works.

Manufacturer warranty implications

Most residential carpet warranties (Shaw, Mohawk, Karastan, etc.) specify a minimum padding density — typically 6-8 lb depending on the warranty tier. Installing over lighter padding technically voids the warranty, though claims are rarely disputed at that level.

Where it matters more: premium carpet warranties (25-year, lifetime residential) almost always require 8 lb minimum padding. Installing a premium carpet over a 6 lb builder pad is common practice among budget installers — and it silently voids the warranty you paid a premium to get.

Ask specifically: “What’s the minimum padding density required by this carpet’s warranty, and is your quoted padding at or above that minimum?” A good installer answers immediately with the specific spec.

The padding line item nobody checks

On every carpet quote, there’s a padding line item — often noted just as “padding” without density. Ask for the density in lbs and the material type (rebond, prime foam, frothed foam) written on the quote. If the installer resists specifying, ask why. This is basic information they should have immediately.

Choosing padding for your rooms

Work through these questions per room.
1
How much daily traffic does this room see?
Low (guest bedroom, formal living room): 6-8 lb rebond acceptable. Medium (main living room, family room): 8 lb rebond minimum. High (stairs, hallways, kids’ rooms): 10 lb rebond.
2
Do you have pets or small children?
If yes, upgrade a tier from what traffic alone would suggest. Pets and kids accelerate padding compression through concentrated wear patterns.
3
Is sound transmission to rooms below important?
For upstairs bedrooms above living areas, consider frothed foam padding — noticeably better sound absorption than rebond. Extra $0.50-$0.80/sq ft, worth it for parent-of-teenager sanity.
4
What's your carpet's warranty requirement?
Read the fine print. Premium warranties often specify 8 lb minimum. Installing lighter voids the warranty — meaning you paid a premium for coverage that no longer exists. Match your padding to your warranty at minimum.

Bottom line

Padding is the invisible spec that determines how long your carpet actually lasts. Six-pound padding halves the lifespan of the carpet above it. Eight-pound is the residential default that lets premium carpet reach its warranty potential. Ten-pound is the smart upgrade for high-traffic and pet households.

The upgrade cost is minor compared to the carpet itself. Get the padding density specified in writing on your quote, and match it to the warranty requirements of the carpet you’re buying. That single specification determines whether you’re replacing carpet in year 10 or year 20.
